Introduction to employee volunteering
What is employee volunteering?
Some employers actively encourage their workforce to volunteer in their local community. This can take many forms, from allowing time off for volunteering, to organising team challenges or incorporating volunteering into personal development plans.
Who offers employee volunteering services?
do-it.org.uk works in partnership with Volunteer Centres and national charities to provide most of the volunteering opportunities available on do-it.org.uk. Some national charities also work directly with employers to create team challenges and individual employee volunteering opportunities.
Volunteer Centres provide support at a local level for individual volunteers and volunteer involving organisations. Some also offer employee volunteering services such as creating team challenges and offer a brokerage service, which matches the needs of employers with the needs of local organisations.
Volunteer involving organisations
Support offered to employers varies but some brokers offer support throughout the project lifecycle, including risk assessment, help with marketing materials and on-site support. Find out more about the role of a broker and why employers might want to take advantage of this support.
If you are a volunteer involving organisation, involving employers and employee volunteers in your work can be difficult. However, there are resources available to help. Before involving employee volunteers think about developing policies and procedures to support employee volunteers, creating partnerships with employers, resources needed and suitable opportunities depending on the employers' and your needs. Find out more about creating suitable opportunities and other considerations.
